The first of the two Sanctuary retreats properties I photographed in Tanzania was Kusini in the Serengeti. Set in the south of the park this remote camp has a huge area all to themselves. Your only neighbours are the wild kind.
Twelve luxury tents and the dining/lounge area are perched on top of a kopje, a surreal area of rocks in the middle of the plains of the Serengeti. A huge rock aptly named Friendly rock is the meeting place for Sundowners after your game drive where you have 360 degree views of the plains and a night sky that is sprinkled with bright lights and the milky way. You can also have your morning coffee on the rock and watch the sun rise which is a definite must-do. The light I had while shooting at Kusini will stick in my mind forever. The views from this magical spot are something out of a dream. It seems that a male leopard also enjoyed the views as much as I did and there was often his prey remains on the rock. My other ‘friends’ I had while staying there were 3 buffalo male dagga boys who hung around almost all the time around my tent. Their night time chewing, hyena calls and the other night sounds of the wild was a beautiful experience.
The feeling of pure nature, wilderness and freedom are only some that you will experience while staying at this magical retreat.
