The second lodge that I photographed in Zanzibar in January this year was the stunning Asilia Africa’s, Matemwe lodge. Situated on the north-east coast of Zanzibar it is quite hidden from most resorts and gives you a real feeling of authentic Zanzibar. Think rustic wooden and rope loungers and couches, the ocean breeze flowing through your bedroom doors and views over Mnemba island at almost every point at the lodge.
The gorgeous rooms are styled in a relaxed but elegant way and interesting touches of detail are everywhere from dishes making statement indents in the walls and comfy slippers and gowns in the bathrooms. Two of the suites have private plunge pools, one of which I was lucky enough to have and I have to say it is a must! Getting to lie in the sun and cool down in the pool right next to your room is so worth it!
Matemwe Retreat isĀ right next to Matemwe lodge and is even more luxurious…private butlers, your own rooftop pool and chill out area. Everything you could ask for.
If you’re looking for a rustic chic retreat with all the normal luxuries (and extra) but with a bit more Zanzibar traditionalism I’d suggest this beautiful lodge. I had a great time photographing here and many thanks to Tracey and all the staff at the lodge who were all so super helpful and friendly! I’ll let the pictures say the rest…
