Sophia’s Christening

Sophia is the daughter of two of my best friends’, Marc and Donna. Of course when they asked me to take a few pictures of her Christening, I naturally said, yes.

Sophia is one ADORABLE little girl and she’s not your typical baby either…instead of things like yoghurt and grapes, Sophia prefers gherkins and olives, just like her Mommy I have watched her numerous times suck on a gherkin like a lollipop! Hahaha! Sophia, precious girl, I look forward to spending more beautiful days with you and of course, one day, the ultimate, your arranged marriage to our one day future baby boy

Tau lodge | Madikwe | Lodge photography

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to photograph a well-known lodge in Madikwe game reserve (one of my favourite reserves in South Africa), Tau lodge. I had such a great time photographing this lodge and especially loved the positioning of it. It is positioned right in front of a waterhole that is very, very active. The two nights I spent there, I had elephants playing in the water numerous times, a lion hunt in front of my room (which you can view by clicking that link), countless plains game and amazing birds in front of my room all the time.

Tau lodge can accommodate up to 60 people and offers an ideal South African conference venue as well as an idyllic wedding venue overlooking a natural waterhole. The food I experienced at Tau was also fabulous and I had to restrain myself from the yummy desserts that were served up after each meal (one of the bad things about being a hotel/lodge photographer!).

The game I experience in Madikwe always amazes me. As I said before I saw all of that from the comfort of my room, nevermind the game drives. I also got to see the newly released cheetahs and had an awesome guide, Grant, who made sure I had the best positioning to photograph anything I wanted to. Thanks so much Grant, I wouldn’t have got a lot of the shots I had if it weren’t for you!

A Lion hunt outside my room | Tau lodge | Madikwe

A few weeks ago I was shooting Tau lodge in Madikwe. After the morning drive I went back to my room to shower and when I got out, I went to look on my balcony to see if there was anything interesting walking about at the watering hole (all of the rooms are positioned in front of it). To my surprise I saw two lionesses walking along the ridge, I ran to get my camera, quickly changed the lens and stood waiting. They plonked themselves underneath a tree in the shade and I assumed they would go to sleep, which they did.

About half an hour later (now I was thankfully dressed) I saw 3 warthogs come walking along the same ridge and path that the lionesses had chosen. I quickly got my camera and waited. Something had to happen here…

Sure enough the lionesses spotted them (even though one of the warthogs stood right in front of them and didn’t see or smell them) and the hunt was on…

Oblivious. If you look carefully you can see the lionesses lying under the shade.

A slip that might end it all…

Luckily for the little warthog, he got away. Shame the poor thing squealed for about 10 minutes after the incident running deep into the bush.

Although he got away, this was one of the most exciting sightings I have ever seen and it all happened in broad daylight right outside my room. So it really is true, always keep your camera handy as the right time, right place, might strike when you least expect it (even if you are only dressed in a towel

A Perfect Elephant Sunset | Madikwe

On a recent shoot at Tau lodge in Madikwe, one evening we came across a huge herd of elephants having a few sunset drinks themselves at Tlou dam. I have shot at this dam before and absolutely love the sculptural trees. Anytime here is worth it. On this particular evening the elephants gave us the perfect scene and I was able to capture this mother and baby in the perfect light.

Walker’s River Camp | Lodge Photography Timbavati

On my trip to the Hoedspruit area I photographed an awesome self catering lodge in the Timbavati called Walker’s River Camp. The lodge consists of 5 private suites all with baths, outdoor showers, separate toilets and fan enclosed nets over the beds. The lodge is in a wonderful space overlooking the Klaserie river and is enclosed by a fence making it safe for families with small children. The entertainment area is large with a huge pool stretched over the lawn with views of the river and a beautiful sleeperwood bar and covered lounge area make up the rest of the space. The wonderful staff are on hand to clean, make beds, make the Boma fire and generally assist where possible.

Timbavati is home to the big 5, including the very rare White lions of the area and all are frequent visitors to the camp. Walker’s is the perfect spot for family and friends getaway in a rustic but luxury camp which gives you all the perks of being in the Timbavati: game drives, big 5 and the feeling of being completely surrounded by nature.

Vuyani Safari Lodge | Hoedspruit lodge photography

I visited the wonderful Vuyani Safari lodge in Moditlo Private game reserve a few weeks ago to shoot the lodge. As I entered the reserve the first thing I saw was a pack of Wild dogs playing and splashing in a puddle of water next to the side of the road, what an awesome sighting! I knew that had to have been a good sign for the shoot to follow…

Vuyani is a small but beautiful lodge just outside Hoedspruit in Moditlo. They have 5 gorgeous suites and all the meals are prepared for you with pride and passion. All the food that I ate there was absolutely delicious, including a sweet onion tarte tatin, crispy Cuban style chicken and a watermelon fruit soup – all deliciously yummy! The setting and atmosphere is intimate and the hospitality is wonderful, I’d recommend it to anyone who would love a personalised experience into the beautiful bush of the area, which is home to the big 5. One of the main things I loved about the lodge is that it was unfenced so animals are free to roam where they please, there is nothing better then knowing you are safe in your bedroom but the wild could be just outside your window

Jordan, Bianca and Bradley | Family shoot

I did Bianca’s baby bump shoot a couple of months ago and a few weeks ago I got to meet their little bundle of joy! Jordan is too cute! Luckily the weather held off for the shoot and we able to get some cute photos. Enjoy!

Christine, James and Luke | Family shoot

Sue and Richard | Wedding at Shepstone Gardens

Sue and Richard had their wedding on a beautiful hot day in December at the stunning Shepstone gardens. It is such a wonderful place to shoot because wherever you look their are new opportunities. We had a great time photographing their wedding and enjoying the venue, which is really great (everything about it). Enchanted Island Resort | Round Island | Seychelles

Recently I had a great opportunity to photograph Enchanted Island Resort on Round island in the Seychelles. Although the property is not complete yet (set to open in April 2013) things are definitely on their way for it to become one of the most beautiful resorts in the Seychelles. It is situated on Round Island which is just off Mahe (a 10 minute boat ride) but is private enough for you to feel like you are in another world while still having access to restaurants and activities to do on the mainland, Mahe. You get the best of both worlds.

The styling and decorating of the resort is done with old world charm mixed with modern luxuries. All of the furniture in the villas has been specifically picked and made in India and transported to the island. Antique art pieces from around the world grace the walls and furniture – all authentic. Enchanted is what you feel the moment you step onto the island, like you gone back to a world from many, many years ago.

Alex and Mike | Baby bump shoot

Riley’s first birthday

Riley had an adorable first birthday at the Eagle Canyon Tennis club complete with jumping castle and face painting. Amazingly she thoroughly enjoyed getting her own face painted sitting peacefully on her mom’s lap. For being only one year old I thought that was brilliant! All the kids had a great time as I’m sure you’ll see in the photos

Sun Resorts | Ambre Hotel | Mauritius

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to work with a great hotel group in Mauritius, Sun resorts. Sun resorts owns many properties in Mauritius and the the Maldives including the famous and beautiful Le Tousserok. They had just finished refurbishing Ambre hotel when they asked me to photograph it. Ambre is stunning. It is a very contemporary looking hotel with lots of clean white finishes and splashes of bright turquoise, orange and green in spaces. You definitely get a refreshing feeling while walking through the hotel and its rooms. Ambre is also set up on one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius and the beach stretches on for ages.

If you are thinking of visiting the island soon, be sure to check this hotel out for opening specials. You’ll come back a rejuvenated person, just like the hotel!

Kirsten and Wayne | Atholl garden wedding

I have known Kirsten for a very long time. We went to primary school, high school and and even a bit of college together and have always been friends so I was super excited when she asked me if I could photograph her wedding. Kirsten and Wayne’s wedding was everything that they are – chilled, relaxed, beautiful and full of fun! The decor was stunning, just up my alley and Kirsten’s sister’s house was transformed into the most beautiful wedding venue with Chinese lanterns and hessian adorning the tent. Kirsten and Wayne also decided to christen their son Joshua on the same day, after their ceremony which made the day even more special. We had an awesome time and I hope you guys enjoy the pictures as much as I did taking them. Wishing you all the happiness in the world!! xoxo

Casa De Lua | Vilanculos, Mozambique

A few kilometres out of main town Vilanculos lies Casa de Lua - an awesome self catering lodge situated right on the beach. One of the lodge’s main attractions is the fishing. And it is sure not to disappoint. On my very first trip out to sea to photograph the activities we saw about 30 humpback whales, hundreds of dolphins and I even caught my first fish, a 13kg Couta! Definitely a must for all fisherman or women…I will definitely be going deep sea fishing again! Thanks to Johan for all his hard work helping me around the lodge getting the shots

Casa Cabana Beach | Vilanculos

I recently went up to Vilanculos to photograph two really beautiful lodges on the beach. This is Casa Cabana Beach. What a stunning location and accommodation. But my favourite part about it was it’s beach bar – you can never go wrong with a beach bar! Mozambique at it’s finest! If ever you are in the area be sure to visit this place.

Jackson family shoot | Madikwe Game Reserve, Jaci’s Lodges

As a surprise for his new wife, Trevor had organised a family shoot the day after they got married in Madikwe at Jaci’s lodges. Lynn loved the idea and even after an amazing party (the wedding) they all managed to look awesome the day after (plus a few Cokes I had such a great time photographing this family the day of the wedding and this shoot – they are all great fun and I wish them all the best!
